A young worker claimed she was “difficult here” after she left her entire corporate office shocked by her unusual footwear.
What is considered corporate workwear in 2024 has changed a lot.
People are leaving their toes free by wearing slides; the stomach is out because tank tops are in and no one can agree on what’s office appropriate anymore.
Gen Zers want to wear shorts, Millennials are wondering if they can ditch their blazers, and Boomers are left wondering why everyone dresses so casually now.
Chloe Andrews, 28, took to social media to reveal she was ‘absolutely mature’ for wearing her Tabi shoes to the office.
If you’re not familiar with Tabi shoes, they’re back on trend right now and are traditional Japanese shoes that have a split between the big toe and the rest of the toe to provide flexibility and comfort.
Therefore, despite the shoes being closed, the toes become very front and center. As someone pointed out in the Andrews comments section, shoes can sometimes make you look like you have “goat’s feet” – but they are fashionable.
Andrews decided to take a fashion risk and wear them to her corporate job and then made an online service and filmed her colleagues’ reactions.
“I work in a multi-generational office, so I’m excited to see what some of them have to say,” she said.
The response was very divided. Okay, it wasn’t that divisive, most people in her office just hated her shoes.
The most brutal response was undoubtedly from a work colleague who said the shoes made the 28-year-old look like a “farm animal”.
A male co-worker, rubbing his neck, asked, “What are those?” and, when Andrews gave him some context about her shoes, he simply replied, “I don’t get it.”
At one point, her co-workers were Googleing cow hooves to compare to her shoes. It was absolute office anarchy.
The most supportive response came from two Gen Z staff members, who weren’t negative about her shoe choice and instead cheered her on — one even clapped and said, “Yass!”.
Andrews told news.com.au she was not surprised by the response. adding that she often wears “interesting” outfits to work and said the response to her shoes was more of a “giggle” than anything else.
The 28-year-old said she thinks office fashion doesn’t need to be serious and believes in having fun where you can.
“Our office is quite lucky and we can express ourselves in our clothes and we’re not too strict on traditional corporate dress,” she said.
“I like to mix business with sports and sports and wear what makes me feel good.â€
Her TikTok video has garnered over 800,000 views and has also started a huge conversation about office wear.
“People will laugh, but only you and those in the know will know how stylish it is,” wrote one.
“At first they laugh, then they copy”, calmed down another.
“We spend a lot of time in the office saving our fun clothes for the weekend,” argued one.
“I can’t,” said someone else.
“You’re fighting for your life in that office,” one person joked.
