What can parents do to protect their children’s listening – including risks to be avoided

Hearing health is often something that is taken for granted by parents.

Your baby gets an initial hearing test in a few days and then all you go for your business – to the course, sometimes it’s too late and the injury becomes your children €

So what decibel level is safe for a child/child?

Knowing what is safe

Most audiologists will recommend hearing protection for noise exposure or sounds more than 85 decibels, and government guidelines mandate that employees are not exposed to noise of 85 decibels or higher for more than eight hours.

But it is not about decibel level, it also descends to the duration of exposure.

Continuous exposure to sounds above 80 decibels can also be harmful, so it is important to limit both the intensity and the duration of noise.

It is easy to think that your child does not seek protection from the ear in the early days because of how the new infants can be inattentive for loud noise when they first reach home.

A newborn can go to a loud restaurant or a rock concert, and they will sleep well, despite the noise.

They will also sleep in a central way with full light and the acceleration of a compressed home in the background.

This is because babies are born relatively insensitive to the world around them. This helps to numb the embarrassment of the birth process and allows them to focus on creating nutrition and weight gain.

After three to four weeks, this insensitivity begins to want and babies “wake up”, becoming more alert and unstable externally to stimulate.

If it’s too loudly for you, it’s definitely very noisy for your baby

Really really important in the first few weeks, even if your child is completely insensitive to the sound that you still protect their small earrings.

As children grow loudly, sounds present as well as stronger for them than adults. That’s because the ear is smaller in children.

The sound pressure generated in a child’s ears is greater than that of adults. In other words, the loud sounds for us are even stronger for our children.

How can you say how loudly something is? There are applications on your phone that can mean decibel levels, but as a general guide:

  • Comfortable noise levels are: 0â € 60 dB, which would be things like the conversational speech, the sounds of nature or the overall noise of the house in your bedroom or living room.
  • Levels loud are: 60â 90 dB, which are things like road traffic, motor bicycles or a live concert.
  • Painful noise levels are: Anything over 90 dB and would include things like Alams House, Jackhammers or a Jet Motor. All of these are a potential hearing accident for babies and children.

Avoiding hearing loss caused by noise

Listening loss caused by noise can be more often than not to avoid – here are some of my most frequently asked questions from parents on the subject:

Can I bring my baby or child to a festival, sports event or loud concert?

Yes! But in these large -scale events you have no control over sound levels, so I recommend a lot of hearing protection if you will get your babies or children.

Are some noisy toys very vocal for children?

This tip will benefit you and your children-some noise toys that make noise are extremely vocal (and annoying).

Because children play with toys near their face, 80-90 dB noises can be harmful to their hearing, especially with prolonged use. Try to try the toy noise levels before you buy them.

If you are given toys that makes too high sounds, simply bring out the batteries. You can also place the tape on the speaker to dull the noise.

Should what should parents target with the volume of television/radio/music?

Sound systems have made a long way in both cars and at home, be aware of the volume you have placed yours with the children around.

Is it eight to take my children to see fireworks shows?

The closer you are, the higher they will be – there are regulations about how closed crowds, especially in Australia, can be. As a general rule, if you are in thick things, get hearing protection for children.

Are white noise cars in order for prolonged use?

Absolutely yes! I’m a big fan of white noise, but you will surely find the highest placement in the car is not the safe level to leave for continuous game.

Work out what the safe volume is and do not place it immediately next to your baby’s head.

What about home appliances?

You can find that your children are much more sensitive to these than you are much stronger for children) so conscious when using and avoid using them towards children.

Should my child wear ear protection during flight?

Many people do this, and many companies selling ear protection will tell you to do so, but generally it will not be necessary, audiologists are not deserved for noise inside commercial aircraft.

Most of the engine humor are very similar to the white noise you will play in their room anyway (and they love it!).

If you use earrings for babies during flights, it was less for safety and more for protecting their sleep from other children crying during the flight.

What protection in the ear should I use to protect my baby?

Ear dresses are not recommended for babies, young children or young children, as they are small enough to present a muted accident.

For babies I recommend ear rods – there are many delightful options available with adjustable (wash) baby bands for baby and more powerful strips for older children.

Headphones that attract noise for infants and children will be measured with an NRR (noise landing evaluation) Any jurisdiction will have safety standards that these products must adhere to whatever brand you choose, make sure they are complicated with these standards.

Older children can use ear -sized ears or appropriate size as hearing protectors.

Beyond exposure to loud sounds, the causes of hearing problems in children include otitis media (middle ear infection), genetic disorders and certain diseases (such as meningitis)

You can get your checked children controlled at any time if you are concerned with a reference to an audiologist.

It is important for this our hearing can change over time. Continue to protect your children by listening and monitoring your children listening to and speaking as they grow and discuss each concert with your general doctor or pediatrician.
