Utah approves a first law in Wednesday by searching for apps shop operators like Apple and Google to verify user ages before allowing downloads.
Called the Act of Application Store Liability, Utah’s law also requires app stores to receive parental consent for juveniles before being downloaded.
Mass passed as application store operators and social media firms such as Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, Snap and Google owned YouTube YouTube face intensely by policymakers for their failures to protect children from harmful content.
In a rare step, Meta, Snap and X issued a common state praise of Utah’s law.
The state highlights a division between App Store operators and social media companies, each claiming that the other party is better equipped to handle age verification.
“Parents want a one -stop store to verify their child’s age and give permission for them to download applications in a way of suppressing intimacy. The App Store is the best place for him, “companies said in one state.
Representatives for Apple and Google did not immediately return the posting request for comment.
The Progress Chamber, a large technology -funded policy group representing Apple’s interests, Google and many other firms, said in a blog post that UTAH law “sets a dangerous precedent”.
“While the draft law aims to protect the juveniles from inappropriate content, it eventually imposes comprehensive restrictions on the rights of free speech of all utahns,” the post on the blog said.
The draft law now continues at the table of Utah Gov. Spencer Cox for final approval. If signed, the law would enter into force on May 7.
Apple previously clashed for age verification at the App Store level in its most security online report, arguing that it would require parents to fork on sensitive personal information and endanger their privacy.
“While only some of the app Store apps can require age verification, all users will have to submit their sensitivity personally to identify the information to us.
In addition to Utah, at least eight other countries have presented similar invoices regarding age verification while lawmakers clash to impose measures that will protect children online.
The bills present a headache for Google and Apple, each of which faces large lawsuits pending justice, which can increase their business models.
Other countries have set the result in social media firms. Last June, New York state lawmakers adopted a law requires companies to verify users ‘ages and receive parents’ consent before allowing minor users access to algorithmic resources.
As the post reported at the time, Google and Meta led a massive lobbying attempt to try to kill or weaken that New York law.
