It is the so-called Mount Rushmore of international munchies.
The best food in the world can seem subjective – one person’s trash is another’s epicurean treasure. However, travel guide TasteAtlas has taken a stab at it by revealing its annual list of the 100 best dishes on Earth for 2024, which includes roast pork, Neapolitan pizza and Brazilian-style beef.
How could such a divisive list ever be compiled? TasteAtlas did some culinary sourcing, basing the countdown on “367,847 valid reviews for 11,258 dishes” in their database.
1. Lechona (Colombia)
As Vinnie perfectly put it on “Goodfellas,” [pork] “That’s the taste.” The pork-based treat of the year, according to the Taste Atlas, was lechona, which boasted an impressive 4.78 out of five stars in the country.
The hearty Colombian centerpiece “involves butchering, marinating and layering pork, split peas and caramelized onions inside salty pork skin” like a crunchy meat piñata.
“The skin is tightly stitched to enclose the rich filling, then slow-roasted for hours to achieve a golden, crispy exterior and soft, flavorful interior,” they write. “Coated with bitter orange juice during cooking, the skin develops its characteristic crackle and smell.”
Their main restaurants for this bag of pigskin goodness are lechonería Donde Jimmy (Bogotá), Lechonería Donde and Pacheco (Bogotá) and Restaurante Boquerón (Ibagué).
2. Neapolitan pizza (Italy)
The basis for the New York-style pie spread, the runner-up Neapolitan pizza scored 4.75 out of 5. For those who have been living under a gastronomic rock, the most popular version of this minimalist dish includes a thin crust with tomatoes. – sauce based on garlic and oregano. This is topped with the holy trinity of tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil leaves, the colors of which are said to represent the Italian flag.
While all of the restaurant recommendations were — perhaps understandably — in Naples, Manhattan’s Una Pizza Napoletana probably deserves a bigger share of the with devotion since it was ranked No. 1 of the Top 50 Global Pizzas in June.
3. Picanha (Brazil)
Fine beef may seem synonymous with high-end Japanese Wagyu, but TasteAtlas fans voted this staple of Brazilian all-you-can-eat spots the best in this top steaks competition.
Also known as the fillet cap, the picanha (which boasts 4.68 out of five stars) is located on the back of the animal, above the buttock, where a veritable glacier of fat adorns it. It’s a churrascaria staple, where these meat sticks are grilled and skewered to serve.
Incidentally, the cut itself has no marbling, so chefs have to cook it perfectly to prevent it from becoming too chewy during grilling.
4. Rechta (Algeria)
In fourth place with 4.68 out of five stars is rechta, an Algerian dish of thin, flat noodles and chicken sauce.
“The noodles are made with a combination of flour, salt and water, while the sauce is made with pieces of chicken, onions, garlic, oil, chickpeas, cinnamon, turnips, potatoes and zucchini” and other ingredients, writes TasteAtlas. “The dish is especially popular during festive events such as weddings, Eid al-Fitr (the end of Ramadan) and Ashura.”
5. Kari Phanaeng (Thailand)
Rounding out the top five was phanaeng curry (4.65 out of 5), surprisingly the only Asian dish to make the top five.
This aromatic oasis in a bowl consists of meat – generally beef, chicken, duck or pork – simmered in coconut milk, makrut lime leaves, fish sauce, palm sugar and Thai curry paste.
This is then garnished with thinly sliced lime leaves, slices of Thai chilli and a splash of coconut milk to bring the symphony of flavors to HD.
The origins of phanaeng curry are as obscure as the curry itself.
“It is often associated with the Malaysian state of Penang, but there is little evidence to support this claim,” writes TasteAtlas.
“However, the earliest known recipe is found in Maawm Sohm Jeen’s book Tam Raa Gap Khao, dating back to 1890.”
