Beware ‘fantasy face’: How watching football can give you wrinkles, according to a doctor

Talk about offensive lines.

Rooting for your favorite football team through thrilling highs and shocking lows can wreak havoc on your skin, leaving you with wrinkles that last long after the Super Bowl.

Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Muneeb Shah is warning about the dangers of “fantasy face” and breaking down how to mount a strong defense against it.

“If you’re watching the game on TV or in person, and you’re really focused, you end up contorting your face a little bit and holding it like that,” said Dr. Shah told The Post.

“And I always joke — you know when your mom used to say, ‘If you keep making that face, it’s going to stick like this?’ There is some truth to this in actual dermatology, which is why Botox has become so popular.

“So that’s what’s happening with the ghost—you’re really focused, or you’re blinking, or you’re worried, and you’ll have that furrowed brow. You’ll get those 11 lines to form, you you will get those horizontal lines to form.

“And at the end of the day, if you do it enough, it’ll stick like that.”

High emotions during arrival can also increase levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which can lower collagen and make you break out.

“It can make your acne worse by acting on your sebaceous glands to increase oil production. It can make your acne worse, but it can also damage or reduce your collagen production,” said Dr, Shah.

“So two things are happening in times of stress. You’re bleaching your face, so you’re going to get those chiseled lines, but you’re also losing that collagen support and that elastin support that allows your skin to bounce back after you’re bleaching. So it’s kind of a double effect.”

But what can be done about it? As any superfan knows, simply deciding to “chill out” usually doesn’t cut it.

If injections aren’t your jam, there are other products that can help combat the lasting impact of “funksitis” on your face, including a retinoid, a moisturizer, and sunscreen.

“Sun protection is very important to protect your collagen and elastin,” said Dr. Chess.

He also recommends Neutrogena’s Collagen Bank line, which includes a daytime moisturizer with SPF and a nighttime moisturizer without it.

While we know that collagen loss contributes to skin aging, many current collagen products on the market don’t work because collagen molecules are naturally too large to absorb into the skin. Dr. Shah says Neutrogena has found a way around this.

“If something is larger than 500 Daltons, it’s not able to get to the skin,” he said. “So they created this micronized peptide that is able to travel into that collagen layer to stimulate collagen production and elastin production.”

With more collagen, your skin bounces back faster – so the lines that appear on your face while you scream at the screen don’t stick around.

And macho men whose mood depends on the outcome of the game, take note: The doctor also pointed out that this is not just a problem for the ladies.

“Both men and women will have this problem equally, and the treatments will be almost the same,” he said.
