Stopping for a quick coffee while walking the dog is a classic pastime.
But it seems some people are officially sick of it, with one woman taking to Reddit to ask how dogs should be treated in places they’re not supposed to be.
“Would that be a move Karen?”
A Sydney woman has taken to Reddit asking a question about her local cafe’s dog policy and whether she can ask them to enforce it properly.
“Where I live there is a really nice and popular coffee shop with an outdoor seating area,” the woman said in the post.
“There’s a sign on the door that says please keep dogs outside, but a lot of people ignore it and bring their bags inside while they wait for the food coffee. I’m an animal lover, but not a big fan of dogs inside restaurants. They are unhygienic.
“Would it be a move of Karen’s to ask the staff to enforce the dog policy?”
“Customer will be leaving soon”
Many commenters on the post agreed with the woman, saying she would be within her rights to ask staff to enforce the cafe’s policy.
“I’d appreciate it if you did, but I don’t mind being a KaRob (?) myself. My dad brings bags of dog food to a local cafe and feeds his dogs at the tables. It’s disgusting. Yes, I told him,” said one commenter.
“Talk to the customers while ignoring the sign itself, save the poor bartender who’s probably under the pump the hassle,” suggested another.
However, others said that although people were doing the wrong thing, saying something would be a Karen move and a waste of effort.
“It’s really the staff who decide to pick their battles many times an hour, the customer will soon leave and the situation will resolve itself,” suggested one.
“Not a fan. But really, if they’re waiting for a coffee, it’s unlikely to last long. As long as they are not spoiling the customers and are under the control of their owners.. who cares?” another agreed.
“I have a dog. I don’t even like dogs in cafes. The beer gardens are at the bottom. Would you be a Karen asking for the dogs to be removed? Sorry, yes, – said a third.
Should dogs be allowed?
The post started a wider debate about whether dogs should be allowed inside cafes at all.
Many agreed with the original poster, calling the dogs loud, clumsy and unsanitary.
“Not a fan. They smell bad, they pee – and they can disturb other customers like the elderly, babies or children,” said one commenter.
“Eat with your dog all you want, but I don’t want to be forced to eat with your dog too. I also don’t really want to have a leg dripping with dog saliva. Is it too much to ask if I’m trying to enjoy a cup of coffee,” added another.
“I don’t like dogs to be where I eat or drink. Your dog is an animal. It is able to live in the wild. It won’t die if it’s home alone for a few hours while you go out, whether or not it’s your ‘fur baby’ or some other sad euphemism you use for needing an animal to fill a void in your personality.” , said a third.
Others disagreed, saying their dogs should be just as welcome as everyone else’s.
“I don’t really understand the unhygienic argument. People have lived (and eaten) with and around dogs forever and we’re fine,” said one commenter.
“I don’t care, I like dogs. No more or less hygienic than having a dog in your house,” said another.
However, most said it depends on the dog itself and its behavior in public.
“I love dogs and I don’t mind them in coffee shops as long as they are well behaved,” said one commenter.
“As long as the dog isn’t one of those loud noisy little dogs,” said another.
“Know your dog. Mine is not good in busy public places because he complains a lot about being moved so we don’t take him to the cafe,” said a third.
