Like many Americans, Harley Hurosky from Texas decided to participate in the “Dry January” movement and forget about alcohol for a month after overindulging during the holidays.
“Doing a lot of food and drink during the holiday season made me feel less than stellar,” Harley told Fox News Digital. “So I thought starting the year with the goal of feeling better physically would be a smart move.”
Hurosky, who lives in Houston, hoped she would develop a circle of supporters to not only cheer her on, but also join her on her booze-free vacation. That didn’t exactly happen.
“Of course, I assumed that my friends and family would rally around me and rally for moral support,” Hurosky said. “Apparently, the only thing they’re committed to is sitting comfortably on the sidelines with cocktails in hand.”
Hurosky decided to record the reactions of those he asked and post their answers on social networks.
“My parents made the list because, well, they’re reliable when it comes to answering the phone and because I thought their reactions would be fun, which they absolutely were,” she said.
“I fully expected most of my loved ones to answer with an easy ‘no,’ especially after asking them to give up alcohol for an entire month felt like a brave move,” Hurosky said. “But their reactions — both the rejections and the laughter — were exactly what made the video so entertaining.”
The viral video has racked up more than 743,000 views on TikTok since earlier this weekend.
Hurosky is a marketing manager and said she enjoys posting on social media.
“Honestly, I like the process. It’s so much fun to create and share moments that make people smile or laugh,” she said. “My content usually focuses on relatable, funny situations because that’s how I tend to connect with people.”
Hurosky said most of those she asked are “very social and travel a lot,” so she anticipated some hilarious reactions.
“That’s exactly why I recorded the whole FaceTime,” she continued. “What I didn’t expect was that the funniest answers would come from my parents. My dad, who is as nerdy as I am, absolutely stole the show. Sorry to doubt you, Dad. You really gave in.”
Hurosky is confident she can get through January without booze.
“This is not my first appearance at Dry Janar. My boyfriend and I successfully completed it last year,” she told Fox News Digital.
“The goal was to lose a few pounds and start a healthier lifestyle.”
Although they were able to cut out liquid calories last year, Hurosky said the couple “may have overcompensated with takeout and restaurant meals… Let’s just say the calories we saved by skipping of cocktails, may have been sent back through our delivery orders.”
But she noticed some other benefits to skipping alcohol.
“We definitely felt less groggy and enjoyed life without the dreaded hangovers,” Hurosky said.
“Plus, we proved to ourselves that we could stick to the challenge and go a whole month without drinking, so I’d call it a win all in all.”
In the end, Hurosky said she wasn’t surprised by the rejections from her friends and family this year.
“I’ve surrounded myself with people who love a good time and a good drink, and Dry January didn’t really fit their vibe.”
