Dog trainer reveals which breed is a ‘terrible’ choice for families: ‘Rabid lunatics’

This decision can come back to bite you.

A dog trainer has revealed a dog breed he thinks is a “terrible choice” for owners: Springer Spaniels.

Will Atherton, a clinical dog behaviourist, said the main reason he doesn’t recommend hunting dogs is because they are “crazy rabid”.

“For some people, a Springer Spaniel can be a great choice and for some people it can be a terrible choice,” he said in a TikTok video amassing 549,000 views.

“I think the reality is that for most people the Springer Spaniel is a terrible choice.”

Breeds, he said, “have a purpose” — and Springer Spaniels aren’t just meant to sit pretty for social media or hang out on the couch.

“A lot of people get them because they look great, these ears are adorable and match a Barbour jacket which makes it Instagram-friendly,” Atherton said.

“However, what they were actually brought up to do—which is to work non-stop like raving madmen through barbed wire and thorns and fauns and all sorts, using their noses to work endlessly—will to say they don’t I don’t have a very good off switch.”

He added: “Getting a dog like that to try and settle down on the couch with you is very difficult to do and is rarely achievable, which is why I see so many here with problem behavior at my dog behavior center .”

Proud owners of Springer Spaniels, however, begged to differ.

“My Springer is probably the laziest dog I’ve ever seen,” said one user in the comments.

“My Starvera just sleeps most of the time,” another person agreed.

“Mine either runs like crazy or sleeps and chills, just two extremes it’s great,” weighed in an additional user.

“My Starver must be a little suspicious because you’ll never meet a dog that wants nothing more than a hug,” wrote someone else, “but when he’s outside he’s crazy, but once he’s a man everything he all I want is sleep and hugs, I love them.”

English Springer Spaniels are described by the American Kennel Club as “a sweet-faced, loving bird dog” that has “energy, stamina and brains.”

The breed, which typically weighs around 40 or 50 kilograms, is “built for long days in the field” and has been “bred to work closely with humans”, meaning they “seek companionship and are miserable when left behind hand”.
