A young Australian woman is going viral for the age-old question most women have asked themselves during their working lives: “Is this too short for work?”
Beth Buckingham has racked up more than a million views on TikTok because she shared an outfit she wore to a corporate job that she now regrets.
The 30-year-old posted an old clip of herself wearing a white miniskirt and asked if it was too short to wear to work.
She then answered her own question.
“Yes, it’s too short! What were you thinking too? Honestly, you’ll put it on and you’ll turn everyone in the office on and you’ll feel uncomfortable all day and wish you never wore it,” she said.
Buckingham shared the video and said it was often a problem for tall girls.
She asked her followers to remind her to “never wear that to work again” and asked for recommendations for skirts that hit mid-thigh and aren’t ugly.
Buckingham’s office outfit divided the internet.
While one who works in government said it was a hard “god no” and another said “Really, your skirt is too short”, several women commented that they often wear the same long skirt to work.
Another said that while she always wears such a skirt, she is unemployed, and another said that Buckingham was “literally her every day” wearing a short skirt to work.
Buckingham added that she was “just a girl trying to dress for work in the summer” and told someone there was “no need to shout” when they answered in all capitals.
“Just go straight to HR when you walk in,” advised one.
“Like a tall girl I feel you”, wrote another.
“No, it’s not too short! Please normalize this,” someone else pleaded.
Buckingham added that while she might regret her work attire, it’s not a “big deal” to wear something like that in Australia, depending on your job. But she added that she felt “personally uncomfortable” after wearing it.
The 30-year-old told news.com.au that in Australia, you “get away” with short skirts, even in the corporate culture in the middle of summer.
“My office is pretty casual, so no one else blinked twice. It’s not that serious,” she said.
“But I personally didn’t feel comfortable wearing it all day because I was moving around, getting up from my desk, walking around, etc. So, I’d like to change the second I filmed that first video. Always clarity in the background.”
Buckingham said that although she plans to stop wearing the skirt, she has made worse fashion choices at work before.
“I’ve worn my jeans to work before and immediately regretted it after sitting down for five minutes. I also forgot to get some new clothes earlier,” she said.
