Exclusive | ‘Return of the pump’: The classic heel beloved by Zendaya, Kendall Jenner is back in style

It might be the right time to kick your flats to the curb.

The classic pump — usually reserved for boardroom executives in pencil skirts and blazers — is expected to reign as the It shoe of 2025 after years of sneakers and ballet flats dominating the trend cycle.

The proliferation of slip-ons in celebrity styles and runway collections has ushered in a heel resurgence, which NYC-based trend forecaster Mandy Lee calls “the return of the pump.”

Unlike stiletto pumps with their distinctive extra pointy toe and high heels, these pumps typically have a softer toe point and a modest heel height. It’s a little lower than Christian Louboutin’s famous “So Kate” style, which is also considered a pump, but has a skinny, stiletto heel that rises to nearly 5 inches.

“It’s like a little pointy toe, maybe a 3-inch pump,” Lee, better known as @oldloserinbrooklyn online, told The Post of the style-specific. “I’ve been seeing the return of that classic pump, not too much, not too much of a kitten heel.”

The chic shoe — worn by royals like Princess Diana and Kate Middleton, who seems particularly fond of her Gianvito Rossi ‘Gianvito 105’ style, which she owns in multiple colors — is getting a cool-girl makeover, and they take over the red carpets, the runways. and the first lines alike.

This week, fashionistas Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber stepped out for dinner in Santa Monica, both sporting iterations of the high heel, Jenner wearing a lower style while Bieber donned a pair with a stiletto heel.

While Zendaya was recently spotted in Louboutin “So Kates,” the “Challengers” actress graced the Golden Globes red carpet in a pair of silk pumps that matched her orange dress.

That same evening, the awards show was filled with understated footwear as A-listers shunned the usual long, strappy sandals.

“Wicked” star Ariana Grande channeled Audrey Hepburn in vintage Givenchy and matching satin pumps, while Angelina Jolie and Kerry Washington paired their dresses with similar pointed heels.

Meanwhile, Tory Burch’s spring show at New York Fashion Week 2025 saw a star-studded front row spotlighting the label’s classic heel—the Perced Pump style that Elle recently called “the shoe cutest”. There is an embellishment on the top from the toe that pierces the leather.

Not to mention the peep-toe pumps that proliferated on the runways from It girl brands Khaite, Miu Miu and Alaïa respectively.

The renaissance of the pump comes amid a resurgence of traditional corporate wear rebranded with a bit of sex appeal, as the “corp-core” and “office siren” aesthetic ushers in a wave of spec-clad fashionistas opting for button-downs, blazers and skirts. pencil .

“I think it’s like for signaling purposes,” Lee said. “It’s like, ‘I want to be taken seriously.'”

The trend — preceded by a rise in kitten heels — also comes after years of mesh clothes and dad sneakers, comfortable shoes popularized during a pandemic-era slump in heel sales.

“It’s been a few years since we’ve really seen the pump have its moment, at least in trends,” Lee said, adding that the signature shoe is a staple for “a lot of different groups of people.”

“Businesswomen — they’re rocking a pump, even though housing has been very popular the last couple of years,” she explained.
