North Korea is the attention of a new residential development in its capital as it emerges from a five-year isolation caused by Pandemia-with leader Kim Jong a personally overseeing a compound of 10,000 units in the Hwasong district of Pyngyang.
The state media released rare images of the Herm Kingdom site on Saturday, displaying high raising ups and a connecting Skybridge, part of a wider initiative to strengthen housing in a long nation by being caught with economic stagnation and widespread deprivation.
The project, set to open the official on April 15 – coinciding with the birthday of Kim Il Sung, the late founder of the country – marks the third stage of a 2021 plan to build 50,000 apartments in Pyongyang by 2026, an attempt aimed at raising conditions on the showcas cap.
Development, described by the Central Korean news agency as a “beautiful and modern urban quarterly urban” Helalying “a new era of prosperity”, includes educational and commercial facilities, with credited to “energize construction plan drafting”.
However, below the smooth outside, the challenges continue.
Chronic electricity deficiencies make elevators unconscious, a reality observed by CNN during past visits, causing authorities to appoint new residents upstairs, while reserving lower levels for the elderly.
Outside Pyongyang, where living standards exceed the rest of the country, housing remains scarce – South Korean researchers estimate that only 70% to 80% of households have proper shelter, with many rural homes that do not have basic services.
This increase in construction, which extends to the mining regions and rural province, a lot of relics on the country’s military, who boasts one million active staff under mandatory 10-year recruitment, and civilian workers working in exhausting conditions.
Pyongyang has seen similar projects in recent years, including the main Tower of Songwa Street, completed in 2022, and the rapid erection of a 70-storey building in Ryomyong New Town in just 74 days-a state media state “Pyongyang Speed”.
However, concerns about structural integrity, highlighted by a 2014 apartment collapse are blamed in “slow building” and “irresponsible supervision”, without any official figure of disclosed victims.
Housing allocations prioritize them loyal to the Kim regime and works in strategic sectors such as science and engineering, reflecting centralized government control.
Amidst an annoying economy, increasing goods costs and continued food shortages, Kim last month described plans to redevelop Pyongyang aging neighborhoods, suggesting an expansion beyond the current five-year target.
While the capital is carefully reopened for limited foreign visitors – Russian tourists briefly entered 2024 – North Korea remains largely closed.
