Finland has been named the happiest place in the world for the eighth year in a row, according to the World Happiness Report 2025 published on Thursday.
Other Nordic countries are also again at the top of the happy rankings in the annual report published by the Oxford University Welfare Research Center.
Apart from Finland, Denmark, Iceland and Sweden, the first four remain in the same order.
The country’s rankings were based on the answers that people give when they were asked to appreciate their lives.
The study was done in partnership with the Gallup analytical firm and the UN sustainable development network.
“Happiness is not just about wealth or growth – it is about trusting, connecting and recognizing people who have their backs,” said Jon Clifton, CEO of Gallup. “If we want a stronger community and economy, we have to invest in what Troli is important: one another.”
Meal sharing and having someone to rely
Researchers say that beyond health and wealth, some factors that affect happiness sound simple deceit: sharing meals with others, having someone to count for social support and family size.
In Mexico and Europe, for example, a home size from four to five people predicts the highest happy levels, the study said.
Belief in the goodness of others is also much more associated with happiness than previously thought, according to the latest findings.
As an example, the report suggests that people who believe that others are willing to return their lost portfolio is a strong predictor of the general happiness of a population.
Nordic nations rank among the best places for the expected and current return of lost wallets, the study found.
In general, researchers said that global evidence on the perceived and current return of lost walls show that people are very pessimistic about the kindness of their community compared to reality.
US falls in its lowest position in the Happiness Ranking
While European countries dominate the top 20 countries in the ranking, there were some exceptions. Despite the fight with Hamas, Israel entered the 8th. Costa Rica and Mexico entered the first 10 places for the first time, ranking 6 and 10 respectively.
When it comes to decreasing the increasing dissatisfaction-united states have fallen in its lowest position to 24, as it previously peaked in 11th place in 2012.
The report says the number of people raising only in the United States has increased 53% over the last two decades.
The United Kingdom, in position 23, is reporting its lowest average life rating since the 2017 report.
Afghanistan is again ranked as the unhappy country in the world, with Afghan women saying their lives are especially difficult.
Sierra Leone in West Africa is the second unhappy, followed by Lebanon, ranking 3th from the bottom.
Almost one fifth of young adults globally have no social support
In a worrying development, the study said that 19% of young adults around the world reported in 2023 that they have no one to support for social support.
This is an increase of 39% compared to 2006.
All countries are ranked according to their self-evaluated life estimates on average over 2022-2024.
Experts in the economy, psychology, sociology and further seek to explain changes in all countries and over time using factors such as GDP per capita, healthy longevity, having someone to account, a sense of freedom, generosity and perceptions of corruption.
