European Union Antitrust Regulators Wednesday issued new warnings for Apple and Google about possible violations of their strict digital rules – an action that is likely to escalate tensions between the EU and President Trump.
The European Commission, the EU competition supervisor, told Google that it can face the big finins for the treatment of its “more favorable” home services than rivals within its research results and restricting rival developers from running users away from its “Play” Android App.
Separately, the Commission warned my apple Cook that it should give rival developers greater access to iOS, operating system used on its iPhones, in order to improve “interaction” and respect the law. Apple has argued by doing so would endanger the user privacy.
Both companies are aimed at the law of European digital markets, which applies to seven companies designated to be “goaliers” of the Internet – Google Parent Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Booking.com, Tiktok Parent by BYTtedance, Meta and Microsoft. Firms can end up to 10% of their global income – potentially reaching tens of billions of dollars.
“Let me be clear: our main focus is to create a culture of compliance with the act of digital markets,” said EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera in a state.
The EU clash for American technology firms has emerged as a major front in its continuous trade with Trump, which has threatened to impose large tariffs against EU members.
The post reached the Trump administration for comment.
Trump, who has compared the EU francs with “extortion overseas”, issued a itself last month, mentioning that its administration “will consider responsible actions as fees to combat digital service taxes (DST), ends, practices and police for foreign governments to decide in the US”.
“President Trump will not allow the foreign government to approve the US tax base for their benefit,” the White House said at the time.
For now, only the commission’s warning to Google comes with the threat of one finally.
However, the research giant exploded the EU’s latest action in a blog post, writing that it increases the “risk of an even worse experience for Europeans”.
“DMA is designed to fix large platforms like Google, Apple and Meta, and strengthen competition, but in reality, it is having the opposite effect by damaging European businesses and consumers,” Google said.
Apple also inserted against regulators.
“Today’s decisions wrap us in the red ribbon, while while while they have to play with the same thing,” Apple said in one state.
“Bad is bad for our products and our European users. We will continue to work with the European Commission to help them understand our concerns on behalf of our users,” the company added.
Last month, the chairman of the House Judicial Committee Jim Jordan asked a conference from Ribera how the EU plans to implement the act of digital markets.
Jordan emphasized that six of the seven “dealers” subject to the law are owned by America.
“These heavy fines seem to have two goals: to force businesses to pursue European standard worldwide, and as a European tax for US companies,” Jordan said in a letter.
