“We managed to hold the jacket of life and sailed on it, and kept us both,” said Gomes, who said they were in the water for another 30 minutes before another ship came and saved them.

“There were no injuries, no scratches, nothing – just psychological trauma because it was a big blow to us,” Gomes said.

The only victim was a backpack containing the couple’s passports, forcing them to contact the Brazilian embassy in Sri Lanka so they could return to their homeland.
