Family, faith and a love to wear are all a large part of a centenary life – but its years on this earth have also produced some surprises.
A great great-grandson whose life has been described as “a testimony of resistance, adaptation and love” recently celebrated her 107th birthday surrounded by her family and friends.
Mary Thomas, born in February. 14, 1918 – While World War I was still enraged – celebrated her birthday at home recently in Stonebridge, in Borough, London of Brent.
Known as “Mama”, the matriarch was surrounded by six generations in her party. Family members baked cakes in the form of one, one zero and seven.
Thomas was wearing all the white for the occasion, completed with a fur hat, according to the news agency, and was described as a “dress lover”.
Family friend Patricia Wharton said the birthday party was filled with “joy, laughter and heart tribes”.
“Mary’s journey through life has been nothing less than extraordinary,” the Wharton said, as the Sens reported.
Born in Dunbarton, Jamaica, Thomas was transferred to the UK 32 years ago.
She would often travel back to her native land for short visits, said sins.
She married husband Charlie Thomas – and the couple had eight children.
Today, Thomas has 25 grandchildren, 40 grandchildren, 25 grandchildren and five grandchildren.
Although her husband died 30 years ago at the age of 79, she still loves her, said Wharton.
Despite her joy to be surrounded by a beloved family, Thomas’s long life, some of those close to her, have been “sadly painted”.
She gave birth to a total of 12 children – but the four died in infancy, reported.
Wharton said on her birthday, her children and her grandchildren – who “do it” – got “to check that she was happy and enjoying her day.”
All those who participated in the birthday celebration, the friend said, “were surprised in her extraordinary memory and her ability to recite writings without encouraging.”
Wharton said that grandchildren “mama” as a “strict, meaningless grandmother”.
The friend added, “Mary’s family gathered to celebrate not only her extraordinary age, but the legacy of love and resistance she has built. The event was a testimony to the strong ties that [have] Six united generations of the family, said Wharton.
