Chemicals found in the US Drinking water is associated with 15% higher risk of colorectal cancer, 33% for bladder cancer

A new analysis from Sweden reports that chlorine water disinfection creates chemical by -products that can increase the risk of bladder cancer by 33% and colorectal cancer by 15%.

The culprit appears to be trihalomethanes (THM), which consist of four compounds – chloroform, bromodichloromethan, dibromochloromethan and bromofor. THM are found in almost all public water systems in the US and European Union.

“What we see is alarming and we need some of the most high quality studies,” the Guardian author of Lead study, Emilie Helte, a researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, told The Guardian.

The practice was so successful in the disappearance of water -born diseases, such as cholera and typhoid fever, that it was soon adopted by the rest of the country and has since been a major element of public health.

But by the 1970s, scientists found that the addition of chlorine in water also brings weaknesses in the form of potentially harmful by -products such as THM and haloacetic acids (Haas).

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has long warned that Thm and Haas can increase the risk of cancer and reproductive issues.

Men may be at greater risk than women, according to new research, published last month in the journal Environmental health perspectives.

Analysis, a summary of 30 scientific studies that included over 90,000 participants, found raised risks of cancer with SM levels as low as 40 parts per billion (GDP).

THMs were detected at 38.1 ppb in NYC water supply, according to EWG data from 2013-19.

SH.BA limits thm to drinking water to 80 ppb, while EWG recommends not exceeding 0.15 ppb.

Helte notes that this problem does not have an easy solution. “Really really important not to use very little disinfectant,” she said, and installing new filtration systems to remove harmful toxins would be costly.

For now, it advises people to continue to drink tap water and recommends the use of activated grain carbon to filter harmful chemicals at home.

Helte research follows the latest reports regarding “forever chemicals” in the US of drinking water supplies. A study linked these chemicals produced with a 33% higher incidence of certain cancellations.
