This outfit did not embody SPIRIT of the airline.
A Texas man has been kicked off a Spirit Airlines flight after wearing an “obscene” hoodie on board, as seen in a viral video.
“It caught me completely off guard,” John Garcia Jr., 43, told the San Antonio Express-News as he recounted his surprise eviction. “Exactly, ‘Man, are you serious?’
The incident reportedly happened on a flight from Los Angeles to San Antonio, according to the video description, which was filmed by a passenger and posted to the FB group 210 La Chismosa.
The father-of-four reportedly wore a black hoodie emblazoned with the phrase “FVCK HATE WORLD TOUR,” which he bought from FWUH.com — an acronym for “FVCK WHAT U HEARD!”
The provocative fashion statement appeared to elicit strong reactions from Spirit staff.
Garcia had reportedly put his luggage in the overhead bin when a female flight attendant approached him and asked if he was in the right seat, the San Antonio Express-News reported.
The passenger confirmed it was his and the crew member left.
However, she returned minutes later and allegedly ordered him to remove his hoodie because it displayed “obscene language”.
Texas initially refused to remove the hood, whereupon the crew member threatened to alert the captain. She then returned with a male flight attendant and the pair gave the flyer an ultimatum: take off the sweatshirt or leave the flight.
When Garcia asked if his hoodie violated any Spirit policies, the flight attendant told him he had to take their word for it. Spirit Airlines’ contract of carriage states that passengers “may be asked to leave an aircraft” if their “clothing is obscene, obscene or offensive in nature.”
Garcia finally capitulated to these in-flight fashion police and reluctantly removed the flashy outfit while still questioning Spirit staff, as seen in the video footage.
They told him that Garcia could file a complaint, and he asked for the names of crew members and security personnel. The incident ended with the pilot being escorted off the plane.
The Texan has since booked another flight to San Antonio, but it reportedly involved a 12-hour layover.
Viewers overwhelmingly seemed to side with him.
The video’s uploader, Andrew Martin Hoel, called the flight attendant a “Karen” – a derogatory term for an entitled woman who controls the behavior of others – and claimed she had missed the message of the sweatshirt.
“What is this world coming to.. his shirt is literally against hate and he was hated,” he wrote. “Please share so this guy can get their video flagrantly violating his freedom of expression!”
“Some people just get it wrong,” declared another. “I hope he sues st by the Spirit.”
“But why was she mad?” drank a third. “He said ‘FVCK HATE’ should we promote ppl to HATE?”
According to FWUH’s website, the clothing company has no particular political message, but aims to “fashionably poke fun at Pop Culture, Current Events, and other common everyday B***-ISH!, while with pride flaunts a BIG FAT middle finger to YOUR feelings!”
Spirit Airlines representatives have since addressed the incident in a statement.
“We want all of our guests to feel welcome and have a great experience traveling with us,” the reps said “We are aware of the video and our team is investigating.”
