A remote Scottish island with no inhabitants is looking for a “manager” – with accommodation provided and a salary of $31,000 a year.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust is looking for a keeper on Handa Island, home to one of Europe’s most important seabird breeding colonies.

Located on the west coast of Sutherland, the island has dramatic cliff views and is accessible via an on-demand pedestrian ferry from Tarbet.

Accommodation for the role will be provided for the duration of the contract – and the role is also available to couples who intend to share the role and live together.

The arrangement will include weekly trips to the remote mainland village of Scourie for laundry, banking and shopping.

According to the job listing, the Handa Island Ranger would “effectively manage” the beautiful remote island.

The successful applicant will be responsible for organizing work programs and a team of volunteers. They will also be responsible for looking after Handa’s wildlife and its 8,000 annual visitors.

The island has no permanent residents so the opportunity would suit someone who is happy to live away from the hustle and bustle of a city.

No particular qualifications are required for this role, but a good knowledge of marine and terrestrial natural history is beneficial.

A current driver’s license and access to a vehicle are also required.

The position is on a fixed six-month contract starting in March, and comes with a salary of $31,000.
