She said “I don’t” to her wedding day glam.
A bride revealed she washed off her professionally applied make-up just 20 minutes before her first look in a scenario she called a “fever dream”.
Lauren Avery, whose account is now private, took to TikTok to share footage of herself removing and reapplying her wedding glam in a video that reached millions of views and sparked a heated debate between brides and makeup artists.
“Main memory: doing my wedding makeup and I hated it so much I decided to wash it off and redo it myself,” she wrote in the clip, in which she can be heard saying she “can’t wait to make a TikTok” about the situation.
She can be seen washing off her make-up over a sink, while a friend holds her now-permed hair. Later, she can be seen reapplying the product to her face.
In the comments, the Daily Mail reported, Avery had asked for a “natural glowy, flushed, bronzed” look and instead claimed the end result was “too powdery” and “too pale.” She claimed the artist, whom she did not name, didn’t show her the look until after it was complete and it “wasn’t what I wanted at all” and “just didn’t feel like me”.
The video, posted just a few days ago, went viral β racking up 21 million views and sparking mixed reactions from other users and makeup artists, including Avery’s own.
A makeup artist and bridal makeup artist said there was no reason for Avery to post on TikTok months after her wedding “other than to bash the makeup artist and hate on her makeup.”
βIt’s one thing that she had to do this to feel better, but she could have moved on quietly. Saying ‘I can’t wait to make a TikTok [about] that’s a bad girl,β one user commented.
“As a bridesmaid [makeup artist] I don’t care what they do as long as they pay me! Wash it off, I don’t care, someone else said.
“This bride who washed off all her makeup before the ceremony is a classic example of a girl’s bad behavior based entirely on her too much desire to post about it later,” wrote another TikTok user.
“You can’t ‘feel bad’ enough to say nothing, but feel completely fine baking the whole experience behind the scenes.”
Kandra Jones, who owns California bridal cosmetology business Twirly Shears and did Avery’s wedding glam, made her TikTok debut with a response to the viral video.
In Jones’ clip, which now has over 55 million views, she said she was shocked to see that Avery was unhappy with her work.
“There was no indication that she was unhappy, honestly,” explained Jones, who has been a bridal makeup and hair artist for more than 20 years.
During her tenure working with brides, she has learned to communicate with clients and read their body language to tell whether or not they are satisfied with the service.
When working with Avery, whose wedding was in August, Jones “had no idea” anything was wrong because the bride seemed “happy.”
According to Jones, Avery had a trial date before her big day and requested some changes to her makeup, which Jones said she changed when she applied her wedding day makeup.
“I don’t really mind washing her makeup off. I mean, it’s her money down the drain,” Jones said.
Rather, what “hurt” Jones was that Avery seemed “so sweet” and “easy to work with.” Instead, “the character of the bride I thought was not who she was.”
Jones received a lot of support in her comments section as people praised her for her “brilliant response” and called her work on Avery “impeccable.”
But in a message to every bride-to-be online, Jones encouraged them to speak up if they’re not happy with the results β or simply not hire a makeup artist at all if DIY is preferred.
“Bride, if you’re getting married, you don’t have to hire a makeup artist,” she noted.
“If you like the way you do your makeup, then do it on your wedding day.”
