NYC is one of the best cities for an active lifestyle – with one of the worst just a few train stops from Midtown

Talk about a tale of two cities.

A new report calls New York one of the best cities in the country for an active lifestyle — while a place just across the Hudson River ranks as one of the worst.

Research from WalletHub ranks the Big Apple second in the nation behind beautiful Honolulu — based on metrics like walkability and access to athletic facilities, fields and hiking trails.

“You can get a lot of exercise just by walking to work, restaurants and other destinations,” the report says of New York’s high score. The city also boasts the second most playgrounds per capita in the country, according to the survey.

“It is one of the best cities when it comes to the availability of dance schools, swimming lessons, bicycle rental facilities, basketball courts, soccer fields and ice rinks,” say the survey authors.

Beyond that, New Yorkers themselves “express a high level of interest in staying active.” This was shown by residents of the city searching the Internet for terms relevant to exercise and exercise equipment in higher volumes than any other city.

“This means that if you’re interested in staying active, you’ll probably be able to find lots of like-minded people to work with.”

The same can’t be said for near-bottom resident Newark, NJ, who scored 93 out of 100 on just one PATH ride. Jersey City, the only other NJ region listed, didn’t fare well at 84 either.

Newark was most hindered by its access to sports and other outdoor activities. The same was true for JC – even though Riverside Prison was named one of the most expensive places to live in the country in recent years.

Also in the overall neighborhood, Philadelphia ranked 9th of all US cities for many of the same reasons as New York. Buffalo, the Empire State’s only other entry, landed in the middle 45th.

Another cool area, Minneapolis, also cracked the top 20 with 17. Its twin city, Saint Paul, was 25 – one spot ahead of No. 26 – San Jose.

North Las Vegas fared worst of all at 100 — once again, showing a deep divide within a metropolitan area. The real Sin City, directly next door, ranks fourth luckiest on the list.
