It’s a subject that many women refuse to talk about for fear of being perceived badly. But this woman is opening up about it.
Karina Irby, who owns the popular swimwear brand Moana Bikini, has opened up about her decision to be childless. She said she and her husband Ryan Jones were met with a range of responses when they revealed their decision not to have children.
Some people respected the decision, some were mad, and others said the couple would likely “change their minds.”
But Irby said it was important to talk about the “taboo” topic, as it could save someone from making a decision they’ll regret. However, she said her reaction had made her reluctant to talk about the subject.
“I have so much love and respect for my parents” I see the work you do and I hate you, but this lifestyle is not for me, and I know it is not for some of you either. € she said.
She said she is often asked if she always knew she didn’t want children. The 35-year-old said she “didn’t know” as she grew up in a society that normalized the birth of babies.
“I feel like through my teenage years I just assumed that’s what I was going to do. But on the other hand, I haven’t given it much thought. I have never been one of those who fantasized about getting married and having children,” she said.
As she grew up, she realized that she still wasn’t thinking about those things like the people around her.
“It just didn’t excite me. But you know what excited me? Building a career for myself,” she said.
At that time, Moana Bikini was “consuming” and took a lot of time. Her mother, for a long time, told her that she would change her mind. Meanwhile, her father did not mind.
“I remember it well, and I’m so sorry mom if you’re watching this, but I remember mom being like, ‘OK Karina, you’re going to change your mind,'” she said.
“Part of me thinks she thought I was saying that to rebel against her. But she gets it now and fully accepts it.â€
Irby said she was “afraid” to share her views on why she didn’t want to upset a parent. But, he shared that the thought of getting pregnant “exasperated” him. She said she knew she could do it but “didn’t want to,” citing potential complications as another issue.
“The current state of the world” was another reason she didn’t want to have children.
“The thought of raising a child in a world of global warming, rising living costs and endless wars scares the hell out of me,” she said.
“I also feel like it would be so unfair to the child that I would birth them into this really twisted, weird world, and then eventually die and they’d be left to fend for themselves. I don’t like this
She said she also knows that even if you have a child, that doesn’t mean they have to like or respect you. The idea of having a “rebellious” child was disturbing to her.
Another reason was the idea of ”losing” herself by becoming a mother and leaving aside her “sense of being” businesses.
Irby said she was worried she would “expose” her child about it.
“People want to tell me that I’m missing out on the greatest opportunity of my life, but what some people don’t realize is that if we have children, we’re taking away our greatest gift in life,” she said.
It’s not the first time Irby has spoken about her choice. In 2021, she spoke for the first time about the “selfish” decision not to have children.
But last year she took to social media to share one woman’s “confrontational” response to her and Mr Jones’ stance.
“I just told a woman I don’t have kids and I’m not having kids, I saw blood coming out of her face,” she said at the time.
“She just didn’t understand why. We had just started making small talk — (she was) super friendly, (a) very nice lady — and then she goes, ‘I see you’re married, how old are you? are you
“I tell her my age, and she goes, ‘Oh, you’re going on.’ So you must have children.
“And I go to her, “No, no baby. Actually, my husband and I have no children
Irby said the woman leaned over and asked, “Okay honey, what are you going to do with your life?”
“Of course nothing, because women who don’t have children don’t have lives,” she joked in the clip.
“I say to her, ‘How long do you have?’
“Anyway, she’s just drinking her wine, looking at me, going, ‘Oh, OK. And you don’t think you’ll be disappointed later? Who will take care of you when you grow up?
“I would never choose to have kids just to take care of me when I grow up. And also, having kids doesn’t guarantee you’ll be taken care of when you’re older, FYI.
“Anyway, I just found the whole thing quite contradictory.”
