Kya Odom was forced to face a shocking truth after losing 30 pounds in just over 30 days.
Her face was deflated.
So to plump up her bum after dropping from 155 to 125 pounds, the young Gen Z from Columbus, Ohio opted for facial fat transfer.
“I have a BBL face,” Odom, 22, a Hooters waitress turned beauty influencer, laughed to The Post, comparing her $9,000 cosmetic procedure to the famous Brazilian Butt Lift.
And just like BBL surgery, during which wide needles are filled with fat from other areas of the body, facial fat transfer uses liposuction tubes to plump up patients’ cheeks for a youthful finish.
It’s a minimally invasive treatment (and a more natural alternative to dermal fillers) that’s growing in demand amid the rapid weight loss craze fueled by Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro.
Researchers from RealSelf, a virtual health care marketplace, determined a 253% increase in interest in facial fat transfer from January 2023 to October 2024, according to a December report.
Mino Clark, CEO of the plastic surgery center, says the increase in popularity is directly related to the increased use of Ozempic nationwide.
“Rapid weight loss from [weight loss meds] is driving greater demand for procedures like facial fat transfer that restore lost volume,” she told The Post.
It’s all about looking awesome, not skinny.
Thanks to the current thin-is-in movement, almost everyone—from A-listers to average Joes, and Baby Boomers to Zoomers—is shedding excess flab with the help of obesity surgeries and medications like Ozempic, Monjauro, and Wegovy.
Although the social movement toward slimming has caused a recent drop in obesity rates in the U.S., the proliferation of weight-loss drugs has left some users looking less than their best.
The not-so-sexy side effects of the drugs, such as the dreaded “Ozempic butt” or flabby “Ozempic breasts,” have caused the physique to land in all the wrong places.
But it’s the “Ozempic Face” that really takes the cake.
Many have claimed that celebrities such as Jessica Simpson, Sharon Osborne and Scott Disick, who have recently lost weight, have lost the fullness in their faces, with many speculating that this is due to the strokes.
But instead of packing on the pounds, boys and girls are booking appointments to get filled with the doctor’s syringe.
“More people have ‘filler scares’ these days — and that’s especially true in New York,” Clark said, referring to concerns that artificial injections can produce unnatural results. “So they’re looking for more subtle results and they’re looking for providers that won’t overfill them or give them ‘pillow face.’
Fifth Avenue plastic surgeon Dilip Madnani agrees that the fear of looking grumpy is driving the charge for facial fat transfer in NYC, where costs for the procedure can range from $5,000 to $7,000.
“Rapid weight loss results in loss of volume in the face,” Madnani said, adding that his office receives 5-10 calls a week about augmentation.
“This can lead to hollow cheeks and temples, deeper eyes, nasolabial and marionette folds and sagging skin,” he explained, “[which can make] the face looks older and tired.”
To repair fall damage, Madnani usually harvests donor fat from the abdomen or arms. He then injects five to 20 cubic centimeters, or CC, into the face, depending on the patient’s level of volume loss and desired appearance.
But the expert urges prospective patients to exercise some patience before taking the transfer.
Madnani suggests that people on fat loss journeys wait until they have reached their ideal weight before undergoing facial fat transfer. Continued weight loss can affect the results, causing the newly injected fat to shrink or resorb.
“Facial fat transfer can restore youthful volume,” the doctor said, “enhancing beauty and providing a more rejuvenated appearance, while also improving skin texture and facial contour.”
And he did all of the above for his patient, Sarah.
“Now I can look at myself in the mirror,” the 69-year-old madman, who chose not to reveal her last name for privacy, told The Post.
“I can leave the house faster because I need a lot less to be presentable,” continued the New Yorker, who recently went from 215 to 125 pounds with bariatric surgery.
“I attended my high school reunion and had no anxiety about the look,” Sarah said. “My new problem was accepting compliments graciously.”
Odom’s rejuvenated face has also received high praise.
“My friends at work loved it,” she said.
In addition to her facial fat transfer — for which her surgeon removed fat from her abdomen and lower chin — Odom also underwent rhinoplasty. But she says her co-workers at Hooters barely noticed her new schnoz, due to her renewed glow from facial fat transfer.
“I felt like I was Kim Kardashian,” Odom said. “I had complete checks, my eyes were not empty”.
“It looked alive.”
