Well, it’s about timing.
Many on the Internet have recently realized that one of the most used jokes in the English language is a dual purpose of clever and existential.
The iconic one-liner, “Why did the chicken cross the road?” – the answer is, “Going to the other side” – is more than just a counter joke, it turns out.
The punch line, many have explained, is that the chicken was killed on the road and made it to the “other side”, better known as the afterlife.
“Wait a damn second. You’re telling me the chicken that crossed the road was KILLED and went to the “other side??” IS IT A HOE?” a user X posted on Dec.
“All these years, I thought the little f—er was just crossing the street,” she added in a viral comment filled with foul language.
Many commented on how shocked they were to learn the hidden truth. One admitted they got it after reading a joke to their kids once.
“I don’t know whether to be sad, cry, confused, impressed or really stupid,” wrote another.
“I have to admit, I appreciate shutting down all this chicken crossing road business.”
Another user couldn’t fathom the life-changing discovery after learning the dark meaning behind the nursery rhyme: “This little pig went to market.”
It is believed that the purpose of the first pig to go to market was to be served as a meal – rather than to be treated on a day trip.
The second, who stayed at home, was not ripe enough to eat, while the third – the one with roast beef – had yet to be fattened.
The fourth piglet, who had none, was already quite fat, and the fifth, who cried “ee! my! my!” all the way home, she is crying over her unfortunate fate.
“When I was a kid, I really thought ‘this little piggy went to the market’ meant it actually went to the market, just like I thought it went shopping,” exclaimed one X user.
“No wonder the last one went screaming all the way home,” commented another user.
