‘Boyfriend apps’ take off as Gen Z ditches dating apps for social media appeals

Boyfriend wanted, apply inside.

Gen Z romantic hopefuls are ditching dating apps and moving their search for a partner to a very public forum – their social media accounts.

“So I want to let everyone know that in 2025 I will be accepting boyfriend applications. Yes, very exciting,” declared Anise Armstrong – @anisesarchive – in a now-viral video boldly clarifying that “there is no no need for the ugly, nor the uneducated”.

The sound bite quickly went viral and has now been used by hundreds of other single TikTokkers announcing their desire and requirements for a partner.

In a follow-up video, Armstrong updated the list with the most common additions people added to her comments, also banning broke people, people with children, Trump supporters, unavailable or emotionally unavailable men and short royalty.

“Only boys in love,” she declared. “Be obsessed with me or leave.”

The group consensus also added “only interesting men” and noted that her husband should support her financially.

Meanwhile, others have shared simpler requirements.

“POV: looking for a GF to spend these cold winter days with and hug the hell out of,” Amber Charlotte — @ofc.amber — captioned a video of herself in a crowd holding a sign that says “I’m gay.”

This isn’t the first time desperate singles have posted about their looks for love.

A paralyzed college student went viral in 2022 when she posted a “boyfriend application video,” and one influencer garnered a lot of attention when she allegedly turned down 5,000 men who applied to date her, however, the online option seems to is increasing in popularity as this begins the new year.

Some are even using it to find a significant other for their loved ones.

TikTokker @kell.mel jumped on the trend to promote her fellow YouTuber, Christopher Michael Dixon – known online as ChrisMD.

“Getting girlfriend apps for my brother (I’m sick of being the only girl at Dixon Family Christmas),” she wrote in her video. “To apply, please comment which Taylor Swift song you think best suits each member of society.”

She noted that her beloved brother can cook, clean, play video games and knows all the words to Taylor Swift’s 10-minute version of “All Too Well.”

Another helpful sister – @myracle.worker – also posted an ad for her brother on TikTok.

“Someone my twin brother’s wife. He’s been buying CDs for all his long-distance best friends, choosing the ones he thinks best represent them or are connected to share memories, and he’s attaching handwritten letters to the liner notes, she said.

While it’s still too early in the year to see if any of these videos have led to love, the comments sections are looking promising with people recommending themselves or volunteering singles they know.

While the masses have officially declared dating apps dead, singles are getting more and more creative in their search for their honey.

This includes participating in celebrity crush contests, using AI to attract the partner of their dreams, and even renting billboards to advertise themselves.
