It’s no secret that Austrian slang is a mystery to anyone outside the country – even to many people who live here.
But an American TikTok creator has started a debate about a particular slang term and revealed that we might not even be sure what we’re talking about.
“I feel so stupid!”
An American woman on TikTok as @texaninaustralia has taken to the app to share her embarrassing discovery.
“I just discovered something about Australia and I feel so stupid,” she said.
“I’ve lived in Australia for the past four years and the whole time I’ve lived here, I thought all the women called each other ‘doll.’
“Come to find out, it’s ‘lovely’.” But does it sound like ‘doll’? They called each other ‘dear’, short for ‘dear’.
“It’s so cute, like I used to like it when women called me that, but the whole time I thought they called me ‘doll.’

Aussies in the comments were quick to confirm the woman’s achievement, saying they use the word ‘darling’ all the time.
“Yeah, I almost call thanks Darl or Darling, depends on how good my English is that day,” said one commenter.
“‘Dahl’ or ‘Dahlin’ hope this helps :),” said another.

However, others said they were just as confused, adding that they thought it was a ‘doll’ too.
“Wait. I’m Australian and I thought they were saying doll too 🤷🏼♀️,” said one commenter.
And, it may be because the answer is somewhere in between – with many admitting to going between the two, or using them in different situations.
“Australian here, no one says Darl, except for the very occasional old lady. It could actually be a doll, much more common,” said one commenter.
“Some say doll, some say sweetheart. especially in the northern states you’ll hear like Dahl — those vowels are flattened and it can be similar to Bostonians saying cah instead of car,” said another.
“I go between 😂 sweetheart and doll,” one said.
“We also say doll 😂” admitted another.
“Doll and Darl are both used, but completely different and last many years. It depends on when and where they are used and for which generation,” suggested one commenter.
“This is cool as hell! If it’s a little person, I’d call it a doll, but big people take it Darl’… mostly in the “oh you’re a sweetheart” sense. Us Aussies love to cut everything 😊,” said another.
