Flight passengers are fighting over luggage, with flyers being posted on social media to discuss where to put carry-on bags and the policies behind it.
A traveler shared a recent experience on Reddit in the r/unitedairlines forum under the title “overhead bin ownership and smaller carry-on items”.
The user claimed they had a recent travel experience involving bins, writing, “I was on a flight yesterday where FA [flight attendant] announced that your items should not go directly over your seat and require any overhead space.”
“The flight was packed and the room ran out quickly and people were bumping up and down the aisle. To help with this, it was also requested that if your luggage can fit under the seat, please do so. Seems like a good thing to do,” the user posted.
Fox News Digital reached out to United Airlines for comment.
Redditors took to the comments section to point out the size of the luggage taking up too much space.
“Some of these carry ons are monsters, let’s be honest,” said one user.
Another exclaimed, “part of the problem is that passengers ‘abuse’ their transport fares. Some people would maximize their carry-on size and bring a large ‘personal item’ with them.”
Other users drew attention to passengers traveling with multiple bags.
“This is a pet peeve of mine – passengers should only be allowed 1 carry-on to fit up. I see people riding with a glove, a backpack and a snowboard in addition to their computer bag and bags,” said one.
One added: “The biggest frustration is when early passengers board but 2-3 items in the overhead bins, then when the group 3 boards run out and bags have to be checked again at the gate.”
“If I skip a carry-on and only bring a personal backpack, the bad guy goes in the bin,” said one user.
Another person shared a preference for where they put their bags.
“I always put my luggage in the bin across the hall from where I’m sitting. That way I can watch it to make sure other passengers don’t mess with it when they put their luggage in the bin,” the user said.
United’s website states, “You may bring certain items other than a carry-on bag and personal item for free,” listing items such as a jacket or coat.
On another Reddit forum titled, “r/onebag,” a user titled a post “Top Bin Labels,” asking others to weigh in on the proper placement of personal belongings.
“While I can put one bag under my seat, I choose to put it in the overhead bin to enjoy all the leg/legroom,” said the user.
Adding, “I never thought it was a problem until I had another traveler ask me to move their backpack to make room for their wheeled luggage on a full flight.”
One Reddit user commented, “If I’m paying for a ticket that includes overhead space, I’m not moving my backpack.”
One said: “Every plane I’ve been on they announce over the phone that if your bag can fit under the seat, that’s where it should be.”
California-based etiquette expert Rosalinda Randall told Fox News Digital that “overhead bins are for carry-on luggage, not for your jacket, bag, book or snack that you’ll get up later to get.” .
Randall shared the message often given by flight attendants during the boarding process to allow usable space for everyone’s luggage.
“If you board early or in the first two boarding groups, you’ll probably have a seat in the overhead bin directly above your row, where your luggage belongs,” she added.
Randall said it may be necessary to place a handrail in some rows behind a certain seat because of busy bins.
“If the hassle of waiting once you get to the gate is too much for you, politely ask to be checked. Instead of waiting on the plane, you’ll be waiting at baggage claim,” Randall said.
Randall advised not to rush to get your bags when the plane leaves.
“The polite thing to do is to wait until you can get your luggage without disturbing others.”
Randall said there are some things passengers can do with their luggage that could be considered rude and inconsiderate.
“Put him in a class you didn’t pay for. In the end, those passengers have priority, your bag will be checked if all the bins are full,” she said.
She also said it’s in bad taste to put your luggage in the front of the plane if your seat is in the back or to remove someone’s luggage to fit yours.
“This is not first class behavior; is low class. Besides, what are they supposed to do with their luggage,” Randall said.
She said passengers should be polite when placing their luggage in the overhead bin instead of being “careless [shoving] shopping bags or compressing them to fit your luggage, the items may be fragile.”
She added that some people “thoughtlessly maneuver luggage or use someone’s seat as a stool when trying to put it in the bin”.
