I thought my Christmas Uber driver was cute – but then he gave me an ‘upset’ note

You never know what you’re going to get when you order a ride sharing service to come and pick you up.

The driver may be talkative, or they may not want a drink from you at all.

Some come with drinks, others can let you choose the music and, on Christmas Eve, it seems some are getting into the festive spirit.

But an Australian mum has shared her unique experience in an Uber this week – and she’s not quite sure what to make of it.

The Uber of Christmas

After going out to dinner on Friday night, mum Nama Winston booked an Uber to make sure she ended her night out safely. But she could never predict what would appear.

“The Uber that arrived looked like Christmas had been thrown into it. It was very festive,” she said.

“I asked the driver if he had kids, and he just said he really likes Christmas. Being the polite and also interested person that I am, I asked him if he was celebrating with his family this year. He said his family was in Brazil, so he and his friends spend Christmas together

Apart from the decorations, which ranged from fairy lights to Santa hats and tinsel, everything seemed normal.

As the ride drew to a close, Nama said she was ready to get out of the car – though not before the driver gave her one last message.

“As we were driving, I noticed him rustling something in the driver’s seat,” she said.

“Seeing him drive carefully, I was relieved when I got home.

“He turned around and handed me an envelope.

“Merry Christmas,” he said.

“I saw it was sealed with a little Christmas sticker. It was also addressed to me directly.â€

“Bored!”

Despite being more than a little awkward, Nama said she thanked the driver for his kind gesture and wished him a happy holiday before getting out of the car.

Then, she rushed upstairs to show her teenage son so they could open the envelope together.

Inside was a card, a Christmas chocolate and a candy cane. The card, with Nama’s name on it, read a simple message.

“Thank you for being a valued passenger. I’m glad I was able to get you safely to your destination,” he said.

“Your trust and kindness make my job a pleasure! I wish you happiness, health and love always!â€

Upon showing her son, the thoughts were definitely mixed.

“At first I thought it was a little promotion for him as a driver, but really, his message was so honest, it seemed really real,” she said.

“My son wasn’t that impressed and pronounced the whole thing ‘bored!’

“Yes, it seemed a little too familiar, and I was strange because of it; but it also made me think about how cynical I am, mostly thanks to social media, where good deeds are often questioned.

Friends also weighed in, with one agreeing the move was “creepy” and warning against eating the sweets, while another joked: “This is your next chance at love.”

And so it begs the question – was the driver just trying to do something good, or is it all just a little weird?
